Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease,
what is it?

Curvature of the penis, known as Peyronies disease occurs when scar tissue forms on the erectile cylinders of your penis, known as the corpora cavernosa.  Occasionally it can be due to trauma such as a penile fracture. There are also some people who are more genetically susceptible to it than others. However, the majority of men do not remember any specific event that led to the development of the curvature. Most likely it is the result of microtrauma over time to the corpora cavernosa resulting is scar tissue formation

Treatments for Peyronie’s disease

Injections

Treatment options include injections such as Xiaflex which is the only FDA-approved injectable medication administered to the plaque to break down scar tissues. Xiaflex is administered by a very small insulin needle. The treatment course is 8 total injections broken into 4 treatment cycles of 2 injections for each cycle. There is a 6 week recovery period between cycles where patients are asked to perform at home modeling. Men can expect on average a 20 degree curvature improvement after Xiaflex treatment.

Surgery

For more severe curvatures or those that do not respond to Xiaflex surgery such as penile plication or removal of the plaque and placement of a graft may be necessary.  This is a minor surgery that is done at an outpatient surgery center. Surgery offers a more up-front and definitive treatment outcome for patients. Recovery time until men can resume sexual activity is usually around 6 weeks.

FAQ'S

What can I expect after surgery to correct Peyronie’s disease?

The surgery is a short outpatient procedure, after which patients go home with a dressing in place. There will be some bruising and swelling. Men are able to return to sexual activity around 6 weeks after the surgery. Men who undergo plication surgery will have some penile shortening depending how severe the degree of curvature is. Men who undergo plaque excision and grafting will feel some bumps and lumps where the graft has been placed after the surgery these improve in the first few months but may be noticeable long term.

Is this covered by my insurance?

Most insurances cover the Xiaflex medication. Also, most insurances will cover surgical correction if necessary. Our team will work with your insurance provider to confirm coverage.
